This is an Artsy Online Exclusive
Bermudez Projects is proud to present No Woman Stands Alone, the gallery’s first Artsy Online Exclusive exhibition.
Uniting these three Los Angeles-based artists for the first time, this exhibition highlights the physical prowess of each one’s printmaking practice. Woodblocks, linocuts, and etchings demonstrate the shared skill and agility these women possess in mastering their respective media, while providing a deeper examining to their subject matter.
From Yolanda González’s introspectively psychological figurative abstractions to Alisha Sofia’s poignant appreciations of the feminine form to Erynn Richardson’s zoological and botanical studies, each of these women expand on printmaking traditions.
During a months-long Artist-in-Residency program in Japan, Yolanda González was introduced to the dogmatic concepts of Japanese aesthetics – such as Wabi-sabi – and, a key tenet of Zen Buddhism – mu – by printmakers. This new style was imbued into her Chicana heritage. The result is a series of dramatic woodblock prints, replete with grief and longing.
Erynn Richardson’s intricately constructed mixed-media etchings and beautiful ink and watercolor drawings belie the truth that the artist is indeed a reluctant romantic. Through her artworks, the artist attempts to capture the very essence of objects she struggles not to be attached to. Yet, by the extremely elaborate nature of her work process, Richardson informs audiences of her deep attachment to her subjects and the great depth to which she feels towards them.
Alisha Sofia’s practice focuses on the female form as both creator and artifact of visual identity. Her subjects, partially or completely nude, are surrounded by a rich symbolic lexicon of food, plants, and animals. Refusing objectification, they are calmly defiant: their power, strength, and intimate detail command engagement. Sofia’s technical strength and command of her materials allows the subtleties of each personality to emerge from her paintings.
