Bermudez Projects, in partnership with the AltaMed Art Collection, proudly presents Ghetto Gloss | The Chicana Avant-Garde, 1980-2010 as part of Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA’s Participating Gallery Program.
Ghetto Gloss, on view at Bermudez Projects | NELA/Cypress Park, celebrates a profound period in history when Chicana and Latina artists expanded their creative expression by moving beyond the preoccupations of the Chicano Art Movement (El Movimiento) and art collectives such as Los Four and ASCO. This flowering of new ideas, experimentation of materials, and breaking away from “traditional” imagery that was expected of Chicano and Latino art, resulted in the proliferation of artworks that were a stark contrast from those created in the 1960s and 1970s, and were also distinct from the work of male Chicano artists in this period.
Radical changes in politics, culture, fashion, and design in the 1980s, 1990s, and the new millennium, inspired this new wave of artists to introduce remarkable artistic philosophies and methodologies into the art historical canon via photography, sculpture, video, installation, prints, paintings, collage, and performance.
Ghetto Gloss presents a roster of artists of national and international renown: Elsa Flores Almaraz, Judy Baca, Cindy Santos Bravo, Diane Gamboa, Camille Rose Garcia, Yolanda Gonzalez, Shizu Saldamando, Patssi Valdez, and Linda Vallejo. Approximately 20 artworks – from public and private collections – will be on display, including the world premier of Linda Vallejo’s short-film Take a Bite (1977).
Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, is a far- reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Supported by grants from the Getty Foundation, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA takes place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California, from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and from San Diego to Santa Barbara.
