Bermudez Projects is excited to present this online exclusive, supplementing the exhibition Eastside Luv, Part 1 now on view in partnership with LAist/Southern California Public Radio.

Los Angeles’ Eastside neighborhoods have a rich history dating back to the 1870s when John Strother Griffin (1816–1898), dubbed “the father of East Los Angeles,” is said to have created the first suburb of the city of Los Angeles in Lincoln Heights. Called La Rosa de Castilla, the rancho was located on the east side of the Los Angeles River, taking in the deserted hills between Los Angeles and Pasadena.

Since then, The Eastside has grown into an urban region encompassing the neighborhoods east of the Los Angeles River – Boyle Heights, El Sereno, Lincoln Heights and, arguably Cypress Park, Glassell Park, and Highland Park.

Eastside Luv, Part 1 highlights the artworks of five artists, all of whom either live, work, or whose work reflects life of these Eastside communities. Photographic prints, 2D relief sculpture, serigraphs, and mixed-media prints will come together to illustrate the dynamic diversity of one of Los Angeles’ historic regions, which for these artists is deserving of attention and recognition.

Honest, bold, and richly illustrated, this exhibition is equal parts narrative, poetry, theater, and drama!

Eastside Luv, Part 1 is the latest in a series of exhibits at LAist focusing on Southern California life and history, and is curated by Bermudez Projects.
