In Afro Futures, this multimedia group show discusses how Black artists have contributed greatly to the larger cultural landscape of the United States. Although some of it may be co-opted and filtered into a whole new form by the dominant culture, it is crucial for people to know the history and the contributions Blacks, African-Americans, and Afro-Americans make to the fabric of this country.
Black people have been producing visual art in the US since slavery. But only recently has the mainstream moved from fetishization towards true appreciation and acceptance, with representation by prominent art galleries, exhibitions in major US museums, and acquisitions by cultural institutions and prominent collectors.
Afro Futures presents works by a new generation of artists whose philosophies and methodologies reflect those of their predecessors, while demonstrating their own unique visual language. Ranging in creative styles – from traditional figuration to figurative abstraction – these works continue the rich history of Black art in America.
