Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Medium @ The Getty Center
Through July 31, 2016
One of the most influential visual artists of the 20th century, Robert Mapplethorpe’s retrospective is so huge, it requires two museums to show it (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the other)! This show at The Getty Center examines his photographic work from the early 1970s to the 1990s. Featuring portraits, nudes, still lifes, and the controversial X Portfolio, The Perfect Medium also explores the artist’s studio practice and the creation of his foundation.

Devin Liston: The Department of Water and Power @ KP Projects
Through May 7, 2016
In his newest series, Devin Liston combines loose abstraction with structured design and composition. The resulting juxtaposition expresses an “existential search for power and meaning.” Colorful, strong, and fluid, Liston’s imagery combines realism with figuration, inciting a nigh-spiritual experience when in the presence of these seemingly metaphysical landscapes.

In Focus: Electric! @ The Getty Center
Through August 28, 2016
With all the attention on Robert Mapplethorpe, it can be easy to overlook this fascinating exhibit of historic photographs highlighting the “allure of artificial illumination.” With materials spanning 140 years, visitors will see a range of media and light sources used by artists to capture their respective images. Additionally, the exhibit examines artists’ more recent works expressing the “unease about life tethered to the grid.”

Catherine Fairbanks: Two Chimneys @ Wilding Cran Gallery
Through May 28, 2016
Catherine Fairbanks’ recent installation at Wilding Cran Gallery is both awe-striking and comforting. Whether it be through paper mâché sculptures or through the use of horsehair or earthenware, each of the artist’s artworks conveys a sense grounding and the sheer beauty of natural domesticity. Fairbanks’ strength as an artist is palpable, as the gallery which inhabits her works becomes art itself, as a space of home and hearth.

wolvesmouth: taxa @ MOCA
Through July 2016
A jaw dropping experience that leaves you wanting more. This pretty much sums what to expect at wolvesmouth’s pop-up at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary. Chef Craig Thornton creates a multi-sensory dining experience where food, art, sound, and light exist for the sole purpose of providing guests with a thoughtfully created menu that goes beyond exhibition or dining. The communal table offers a chance to share more than just a meal. And the art installation – all created by Thornton – keeps your eyes in constant motion as equally “curated” plates of food are served. Note: This is a limited-run ticketed event.
